The Siren is a mythological creature that brought many sailors plummeting to their deaths, by singing an enchanting song that caused them to crash their ships. Many people first hear about this creature when reading the famous epic poem, titled The Odyssey, written by Homer. Odysseusís men trick the Sirens by placing beeswax in their ears, so that they canít hear the song of the Sirens. Even Odysseus takes a big risk by tying himself to the mast, just so he can be the only man who has head the Sirenís song, and have lived to tell the story. In the end, Odysseus and his crew eventually safely pass the islands of the Sirens.
Origin: Sirens originated form Greek mythology. They are sea nymphs who lured sailors to disaster with their enchanting singing. They were dangerous bird-like women. All the locations where Sirens were reported to live, were surrounded by cliffs and rocks. Seamen who sailed near enough to the islands would by mesmerized by the Sirenís enchanting voices, leading them to their deaths when shipwrecking upon the rocky coasts.
Appearance: In the world of early Greek artwork, Sirens were shown to be birds with large womenís heads, bird feathers and scaly feet and even sometimes a lionís mane. Later on, they were shown as females with legs of birds, sometimes with wings and sometimes without them, they also played musical instruments. Most of the time, that instrument happened to be a harp. The 10th century Byzantine encyclopedia (Suda) explains that from the chest up that Sirens had the form of sparrows, and below their chest the were women or that they were little birds with the faces of women.
Influences on Modern Day: In literature, Sirens influenced the name of the superhero Siryn, who was a Marvel Comics character. They are probably most know in The Odyssey written by Homer. On television sirens they have appeared on many shows such as Charmed, Red Dwarf and Batman. Also, they appeared in films such as Sirens and O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
