Shiva's Many Names

Shiva has over 100 names. Most of his many names describe Shiva's personality. Many of them describe his great power like Maha-Deva which means Great God. Other names represents his dancing ability. Nata-Raja means lord of the dance. Shiva is one of the greatest gods and also called the Almighty Dancer. These names have a reason to catch on.

One of Shiva's many names is "Blue-throated." This title came from the Hindu Scriptures. It shows how Shiva had once drank poison. He drank this poison because the poison was capable of destroying the world. The poison burned Shiva's throat. He went to the god of the moon [Soma]. The crescent moon was given to Shiva from Soma and he put it on Shiva's head to cool down the pain. Most of Shiva's many names shows how he acts.
