The Southern Ocean is the ocean that covers the area around Antarctica. It is a fairly new ocean, and looks like a ring encircling the southern most continent on earth. It is the fourth largest ocean of the five. Some of its up to date issues include impacts of global warming, environment and climate change research, and fisheries.

Average Depth: 4,000 meters
Greatest Depth: 7,235 meters (South Sandwich Trench)
