"I scream you scream we all scream for Ice Cream!" This chant for the popular dessert of Ice Cream is often heard throughout the world today. Where and when did this loved dessert start? Who invented Ice Cream? This page is dedicated to informing readers all about Ice Cream's history! Where was Ice Cream invented? There are many myths about the start of this tasty treat. The origins of Ice Cream can be traced back to the 4th century BC. The Roman Emperor Nero had ordered ice to be brought down from the mountain tops and be combined with plenty of fruits. Marco Polo learned Chinese methods of creating ice and milk treats in the 1300's, and later brought the recipes to countries all over Europe. Soon these milk ices began to be served in fancier places such as Italian and French royal courts. The recipes traveled all over the world with different people, royalty, and explorers, and it rapidly became a world-wide treat. Though it was very popular in this time period, it was a treat that only royalty was able to enjoy. Ice Cream as we know it today started in the 1600's. King Charles I of England's chef made Ice Cream a common dessert at the royal table. Either the chef was ordered to death if he told the recipe, for the treat, or he was paid a good amount of money to keep it in confidence. When the king was beheaded, the secret was revealed and soon all nobility in Europe loved to eat "crËme ice" Ice Cream was later introduced to the soon-to-be USA in the 18th century. Thomas Jefferson had a recipe for vanilla Ice Cream. George Washington paid almost $200 for a recipe. James and Dolley Madison served Ice Cream at their second inaugural ball. Though it was becoming a more popular treat, Ice Cream was still limited, because of the enormous effort that was needed to make it. Nancy Johnson developed the first hand crank Ice Cream maker, but after this invention, no one even considered making ice cream an industry until Jacob Fussel. He turned his cream industry into and Ice Cream selling business, and he ended up with twice the money! His factory that was located in Baltimore utilized a larger version of the hand crank. Soon, ice cream factories spread all over the entire United States! The dessert of Ice Cream has come a long way. Even though a phenomenon did not start until the 20th Century, Ice Cream is a popular dessert all over the world! |
