Scientific name:  Falco tinnunculus
Family Name:  Falconidae
Are they endangered?  No, they are not endangered worldwide. (IUCN Red list: Least concern)
 

What are their past/present problems?  Their biggest problem is humans shooting them.

What do they look like?  They have reddish brown wings and backs with black spots.  Their bellies and chests are a grayish brown with black spots. Their heads are gray.  They have yellow legs and yellow above their beaks (cere).

How big are they?  They are 1 ˝ feet long.  If they spread out their wings as far as they would go, they would be about 2 ˝ feet wide.

How many eggs do they lay?  Females lay from 3 to 6 white eggs once a year.  The eggs hatch in a month.

How long do the fledglings stay in the nest?  These birds don’t build nests but use old crow or magpie ones.  They will also live in holes in trees.  Sometimes they live on areas that stick out of buildings, like ledges.  The young birds (fledglings) will leave the nest in 5 weeks.

When do they hunt?  They are daytime hunters (diurnal).
What do they eat?  They like to eat insects, birds, and MICE!

Where do they live?  They live in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the United States.

What kind of place do they like to live in?  They like sea coasts, grasslands, valleys with trees, cliffs, and open country areas.

Interesting facts:
These birds can hover (fly in one place) while looking for prey.  Not all birds of prey can do this.
These birds migrate.
