Roadside Hawk


Scientific name: Buteo magnirostris
Family name: Accipitridae

Are they endangered? No, they are not endangered world wide. (IUCN Red list: Least concern)   

What are their past/present problems?  No current problems.

What do they look like?  These birds are different colors depending on where they live.  Some are brown and some are mostly gray.  Many times they have gray backs, reddish-brown wing feathers, black and gray striped tails, and yellow eyes. 

How big are they?  They are about 1 foot long.  If they spread out their wings, they would be about 2 ˝ feet wide.

How many eggs do they lay?  Females lay 2 white eggs with brown spots once a year.  They take 3-4 weeks to hatch.

How long do the fledglings stay in the nest?  They make stick nests.  The young birds leave the nest in 3 weeks.

When do they hunt?  They hunt during the daytime. (diurnal)
What do they eat?  They like to eat insects, reptiles and MICE!
Where do they live? They live in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America.
What kind of place do they like to live in?  They like to live by coasts, by fields, and by forests. 
Interesting facts:
They perch around roads.  Sometimes they sit on telephone wires and sometimes fence posts.  They drop down from their perch to capture their prey.
The Roadside Hawk’s habitat is increasing because of logging in the tropical areas.  This is because this raptor likes to live in forest areas that are just starting to grow.
