A Very Special Phone Call
The most recent moment that is very special to me was February 15 of this year, which happens to be my birthday. A very dear friend of mine lost his wife, and this was the day of her funeral. After all he had been through, he made a phone call about 7:30 pm to me...to wish me a "Happy Birthday". Needless to say, I was absolutely speechless and will never forget that phone call. ~Crystal
The Kindness of Strangers
While driving from Montgomery to Woodstock one year, I lost a tire. Being a lady, and only having a child with me, I wasn't sure what to do. I was in the middle of nowhere and had no cell phone signal. We took the phone and began to walk, intending on walking until the phone got a signal. One man rolled his window down and asked if we needed something. Something in me didn't trust him, so I refused. However, the next men that stopped put me at ease. They not only helped me, but were aware that I was concerned for our safety. They temporarily fixed the tire and followed me to the nearest gas station where I called my family for help. They never asked for anything in return. They were total strangers who were kind enough to help someone in need. I was very thankful that they came by that day. ~Joanna L.
The New Trumpet
While teaching band, many times I use my trumpet for demonstrations. The trumpet I use is very old and in bad shape. One of my students noticed this and thought it would be a good idea to get me a new one. He mentioned this to many of his classmates to see if they would be willing to help him raise the money. No one was willing to help. So, he took it upon himself to personally raise all of the money. At Christmas he came by my house and brought me a big box wrapped in Santa Claus paper. I couldn't imagine what it was. When I opened it up, I was shocked to see that it was a shiny new trumpet. This was the nicest and kindest thing a student has ever done for me. I will never forget the student and the kind gesture he showed to me. ~Brian L.
The Blanket
The Harry Adams family lived just west of the water tank on "The "Hill" in West Blocton. The town, and all of north Alabama, in January 1940 experienced a winter blast of the century. The temperature hovered near zero and below for almost two weeks. Ten inches of snow covered the ground. Water pipes froze all over town and households had to melt snow for water. Caffee Creek froze over and some of us 12-year-olds were able to walk on the ice. School was out for two weeks. No vehicles were able to move because of snow covered, slippery roads.
My Dad was bedridden with heart and lung disease. His drinking water froze on his bedside stand. Open fireplace heat was not sufficient to heat the room. At some point in the deep freeze, there was a knock at the front door. It was a boy with a package from the I. & N. Quality Department Store. He had walked through the snow and ice some three blocks from downtown to make the delivery. The package contained a double blanket for my sick Dad's bed. It was from Mr. Sam Israel, store owner and Masonic Lodge member. Mr. Israel was an Orthodox Jew and my Dad a Methodist. But, they were lodge brothers and close friends.
I remember the blanket gift as an act of extreme kindness. ~C.E. Adams
Kindness in Action
The list of kind things this small community has done for us since our arrival in 2005 could go on forever. We just came up here in August and planned to stay with friends for a few days. Soon, we heard that a hurricane was approaching New Orleans, near where we lived. We watched the events unfold in New Orleans and without hesitation, Mr. Jerry and Mrs. Jo told us to stay as long as we needed. Then, everyone at the school opened their heart and embraced our daughter as if she had been here forever. Everyone made the transition for her go flawlessly. The most wonderful expression of kindness was in 2007 when we made a trip to New Orleans for Kenny Jr's third heart surgery. First Baptist Church, especially Brother Bob and Mrs Nelda, pulled together and helped us out financially and spiritually. Many other members of the community helped out in a multitude of ways and have shown so much kindness to us these past two years. ~Kevlynn and Kenny
One More Day
My Grandma was in the hospital on my birthday. She had cancer for about 11 years. The morning of my birthday, Grandma talked to God and asked him, "Do not take me home on my granddaughter's birthday." Then, she called me on the telephone and told me she asked God to keep her on earth for one more day, and He did. ~Emily
