The Trip to Jessie's Place
Back to Helping Hands
The Kindness Kids wanted to help someone in need. On television we saw that a homeless shelter called, "Jessie's Place" needed help. Our school counselor called them and asked what kind of things they needed. They said they needed mostly coats for children and small toys. The women and children who come to Jessie's Place often come with nothing because they are usually leaving abusive situations. For two weeks, kids at our school brought coats and toys. We packed them in boxes with our school custodian's help. We took the boxes to Jessie's Place which is located in a city about thirty miles away from us.

Yesterday we went to Jessie's Place to drop off the stuff that we collected. We unloaded all the boxes. We had about 8 boxes full of coats, toys, and a few clothes. It was FREEZING! After we took the boxes inside we told the workers what our mission was... to make a website after doing kind things and write about what we learn while doing them. They thought that was very neat. After, we told them that we hoped the children enjoyed what we gave. They said, "Thank you." They seemed very happy. (Bekah, 2008).

At our school, WBES, we had a teddy bear drive. As you know, we are a ThinkQuest Team, building a website about kindness. We did the teddy bear drive as a project. A lot of kids brought things in like clothes, stuffed animals, and toys. It was amazing to see how much stuff that everyone from our school donated. After school on December 17th, 2007, we went with our teacher, Mrs. Harris, to Jessie's Place. The people there were really kind. They told us thank you and that the kids would really like all the things we brought. We told the people there who we were and we told them that we would send them a link to our kindness website when we were finished. I think they were surprised that kids thought about the homeless and wanted to help out.
Note: December 21st is set aside by the National Coalition for the Homeless as a day to remember the homeless. There are over 3 million people in the United States who are homeless. Jessie's Place helps homeless women learn to do jobs and get back on their feet. (Amy, 2008).
