Atmosphere is a layer of gases that surrounds the Earth. Each layer has its own composition and different things happen in each layer.

THERMOSPHERE (IONOSPHERE AND EXOSPHERE)

In this top layer there is very thin and hot air.  This is because the energy from the sun hits this layer first. There are two layers in the thermosphere. Ionosphere is the lower layer. It has electrically charged particles that are called ions. Because of this, radio signals from the Earth can hit the ionosphere and return back to the Earth.  The higher layer of the thermosphere is called the exosphere.

MESOSPHERE

About 25 miles above the Earth is the cold layer named the mesosphere. The temperature is sometimes as low as -225 degrees F! This layers protects the Earth from being hit by objects falling from space, such as meteoroids. These objects burn up in the mesosphere.

STRATOSPHERE

Stratosphere is made of different layers. The lowest layer is just above the troposphere and it is very cold with winds blowing in circles.  Above this layer the stratosphere starts to warm up quickly because the top layer has a layer of ozone that can warm the air  from the sun's energy. This layer also absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun and protects the Earth from it. Unlike the first layer, this layer is warm.

TROPOSPHERE

The troposphere is the layer that is closest to the Earth and  it is only about 10 miles thick. The troposphere has gases that we need to live such as  oxygen and nitrogen. It is warm near the Earth, but gets colder in higher places. This is where our weather happens.
