UK and the Environment

November 15,2000-British meteorological experts from The say global warming is likely to speed up in the next century as higher temperatures cause forests and soils to release carbon into the atmosphere. The world's first computer model to include the effect of climate-induced changes in vegetation and soils forecasts a rise in average land temperature by 2100 of up to 6C, two degrees higher than had been predicted before these effects were included. The computer models predict a rise in global average land temperatures of up to 6C in the next century, 2C higher than previous forecasts. The studies  point to temperatures never experienced in human history, and only matched in the era of the dinosaurs The scientists foresee an Arctic in which sea ice in September is reduced dramatically to a couple of large floes in the middle of clear ocean. Michael Meacher, British Environment Minister, said: "The severity of this cannot be overstated. It is, by far, the greatest problem the world faces today."
