Mortal Kombat was one of the most famous fighting games ever. It implemented the first interactive video game with filmed characters instead of using computer generated fighting characters. This quickly made the game a big hit; it was very fun and looked like a real fight that you controlled when it was first released.

Mortal Kombat also used a much more complex and useful system than its rivals; it used four-buttons arranged in an “X” shape and an eight-way joystick to control the character. It also implemented one of the first ever abilities to use combination moves. When a player pressed one of the attack buttons, his or her character would perform another technique according to which combination of buttons were pressed in a certain order or which way the joystick was turned or moved. It truly revolutionized the fighting game standards we see today. Mortal Kombat also created an extremely famous end to every round of fighting, called the character’s finishing move. The character would carry out an extremely gory and excessively violent final move after the opposing character’s health had run out. These finishing moves ranged from ripping off the losing player’s skull with his or her spine still attached to it as their body fell in its own pool of blood to burning all of the flesh off of the opponents body by throwing up acid on that person. A lot of parents found this game to be especially harmful to their children since it appeared in many arcades and malls; in other words it was easy for anyone, any age to play these games, even if they knew they were not supposed to.
