UNHEALTHY FAST FOOD
|
Team Leader: Kevin Yap Kevin, Leonard, Lin Ping and Bryan are a group of Secondary 3 Students (Age 15) currently studying in Raffles Institution, a Secondary School in Singapore. However, Linas (Age 14) is from Lithuania Europe. I have participated in ThinkQuest before while the rest are participating in it for the first time. Fast Food is everywhere in Singapore. For lunch, we usually eat fast food as it is very near our school. However, after much thought and consideration on the issues currently on Trans Fat and how it is employed in the fast food industries, we decided to investigate on this matter ourselves. Thus, we decided to make an educational website to highlight these important facts and issues regarding Fast Food to Children as they tend to eat more fast food than adults. As a former participant in ThinkQuest, I have the advantage of having the experience. Thus I am able to form a good layout and know what would be a good site. Being the leader, it is also my responsibility to push my group mates to finish their part on time. However, this was an entirely different experience. An eye-opening and enriching experience I would say. Everything was to tally Greek to me, new skills had to be learnt, newer and more difficult problems, the constraint of time and the strain of stress. All in all, it has been a fun and educational roller-coaster ride for me. This has been an arduous learning journey for me. Much of what I have researched on was alien to me before, and it took a lot of time and effort to compile the research I had found. There were many challenges that I faced that demanded certain skills that I lacked, and this pushed me to learn certain skills such as javascript. There were also many difficulties in making sure that everyone played their part. I believe that sometimes conflicts are inevitable, but that did not hinder our progress, because there were always people to fill those gaps that someone may have forgotten, and this held our group together. My main goal throughout this whole process was to make this happen, and I can safely say that although I have not totally stressed myself out, I have put in a lot of effort. This competition was rather challenging for me as I had to communicate to my friends from Singapore. It was great learning and working with people from overseas. This project was rather difficult as I am not very fluent in English and have to check my work for grammar errors frequently. This is my first time taking
part in the Thinkquest competition. I’m usually more adept for
presentations in Powerpoint and reports, so one of the key obstacles
is adapting to the different competition format. Recently, my members and I embarked on the Thinkquest Research Competition. Our topic was on “unhealthy fast food”. This was my first time to initiate a Thinkquest Research Education Project. We had chosen a topic that is a rising topic in the world; fast food is currently a hotspot for intense debates. It was interesting to learn what the world is arguing about. Moreover, we had a superficial knowledge on fast food. Thus, we were and still are trying to seek the truth. Along the way, we learnt more about salt, sugar and transfat, all of which are related to the talk on fast food. We were enlightened. Thus, we decided to pass on what we know to the general public through this website. It holds our research on fast food. We hope that our group’s endless hard work will not be in vain.
