A few years back I had no idea what Open Source meant, but today , with its gaining popularity I find myself invariably using OSS such as Linux, GIMP etc.. which I find much more convenient than their CSS counterparts such as Windows
- Brendon , Australia
OSS is running through the IT community like wildfire. More and more people are willing to help this movement go forward . Open source is not the future , It is the present.
- Nazreena , Sri Lanka:
I am a Linux user, earlier getting drivers / software compatible with Linux used to be headache, but now its as simple as going on a site and clicking a button . No hassles . This is proof of how fast Linux is growing.
- Shubhoshish, India :
Open source stands for innovation, creation and most of all spreading of knowledge in order to improve upon the software through a collective community effort.
- Wayne, Australia
Google returns 128,000,000 results for " Closed source " as compared to a 370,000,000 results for " Open source" . Need more proof ?
-Johan, Sweden
I think OSS is the next big thing. Its just so convenient and at the same time has all the features provided by expensive closed source software.
- Vineet from US
Oss is here to stay. I believe in the next 5 years we are going to witness the death of CSS.
- Darren from UK
I cant believe no one thought of Open source before !!! ITS GREAT .
- Andy from Netherlands
I think this just about sums up my opinion:
OSS: CSS :: Good apples : Bad apples
- Mark from Philippines
Firefox changed the way I surfed the net with tabbed browsing. It is such an ingenious idea.
- Marcela from Brazil
I wanted to make a form on my webpage. I looked through literally thousands of tutorials, and then my friend told me about PHP. It is the easiest and possibly the most powerful language I have come across.
- Matty from Australia
Life is too short for CSS !!
- James from Australia
I believe that companies who do not reveal their source code are insecure about the fact fact that there are thousands of programmers out there who can put then out of buisness anyday.
- Andy from United Kingdom
Perl is the pearl of the programming industry
- Ken from Singapore
Openoffice.org is the best solution I have ever seen for typical office jobs for which I earlier used MS office, but since now I have become an open source supporter I have started using this.
- Ashleigh from UK
How does this affect you?
One might feel that open source does not affect him or her in any manner at all. This is an absolutely wrong assumption. Open source affects all of us, whether we’re corporate heads or housewives. Today we’re living in the information age, software forms the core of it all. Good software leads to better, stronger and more powerful industries. In order to have a strong business we need powerful software, for which the best and the most cost effective solutions are offered by open source. Just look around you, most of the applications on the computer you’re using, most of them will be found to be open source. If you’re a housewife and like watching television or use consumer electronic goods like mp3 players you might never have wondered, but there is a very strong chance that the goods you’re using are actually hard coded with open source software. You might be coding in PHP or debugging in Perl, browsing the web on firefox, creating presentations on Openoffice, downloading a project from Sourceforge, using your SYMBIAN based phone or watching TV using your set top box ( coded with open source software again), you will just see open source software all around you. It’s there, everywhere, just look more carefully. Not only does it affect you, trust us, it even affects your grandchildren.
About Our Team & Thinkquest Website
Aim of The Site
Our site aims at providing a platform to explore and exploit the use and implementation of Open Source Technologies. Our team sincerely believes that Open Source is the ‘next big thing’. The general perception among people about Open Source is that it is just a concept, a concept which cannot be implemented outside of the programming world. Some associate the whole revolution to the Linux OS. In our site, we have shown the tremendous potential this concept has to change, period.
