In our OSS Myth-Busting spree, we noticed that one of the chief misconception people have about open source software companies are all run by volunteers and there isn’t much of a cash flow over there. People believe that OSS developers are just passionate hobbyists and nothing more than that.

But the truth is somewhere far apart from there. Open Source companies are making money, perhaps not as much as the proprietary ones are in this infant stage, but its growing at a breakneck pace!
Here we list our some of the possible career options in the Open Source world –

Independent Developer

Some people are hired by open source companies, who work as freelancers working in their own time to complete projects. These people even get paid for this thing, on a per-project basis.

Employed Developer

Certain section of developers are employed by the open source companies. These people are full-time employees whose work is to integrate the spaghetti code that comes in from the independent developers and hobbyists around the world. Their job is also to check for bugs in code.

Service and Support Provider

Open source companies make most of their money selling support services to corporations. These employees work closely with the client companies to figure out customized support solutions for them.
