Open Source Companies and Advantages
Corporations have choices over here, they can either go for a proprietary software based service or they can even go for an Open Source based support. There are many big names in this category – Red Hat, Novell, Debian to name a few. Standing with an Open Source consultancy services has its own advantages.
The advantages can be summarized as the following:
Before we continue to that, let us inform (read warn) you again that this article too would be based on the same old SourceGorge/Nanosoft analogy…
A corporation by the name Moon Nanosystems based on Aireonus Quintalli had swelled up enough that it literally gave up on its ability to organize and maintain its planetary rack space, inter-galactic bases and universal networks. It looked for some consultancy and support services to help manage and re-organize all their assets, help improve workflow and developmental pace.
Approaching Nanosoft, (which not only shares the first four letters with the former, but is also) the largest corporate provider to be found in Aireonus Quintalli, they decided to start outsourcing management. Thankfully, Nanosoft had a try-before-you-buy sort of a scheme in which they try to be the nicest to their clients in the trial period to get them on business.
Here is the summary of Moon Nanosystems’ five days of trying outsourced management.
Day I – (A reason to rob the Swiss bank...?)
The Nanosoft engineers start camping at Moon Nanosystems’ lunar base and start discussing the custom built business model. Nanosoft teamed up with Whoracle (another software consultancy provider working with close intimacy with Nanosoft) to distribute the workload of organizing the networks and software maintenance.
They first discuss the most important aspect of business, Money. Money is what Nanosoft and Whoracle are here to work for. Money is what Moon Nanosystems is looking forward to save… So its money that brings the two MGCs (Multi Galactic Corporations) on the same page.
The chief of staff representative opens the list of possible costs or in other words, the estimated bill on his holographic projector. It took about 2846 clicks on the scroll bar for the Moon Nanosystem’s guys to fully read it. They even read that thing in shifts of 3 each in one and the conclusion… the hardware infrastructure they had wasn’t powerful enough to crunch such large numbers involved in the finance dept.
Proprietary business services such as Whoracle are that expensive because their services also include the cost of buying their software, licensing, infrastructure upgrades, and many more. They are not only charging for their services, but also for building up pre-service infrastructure as well. Many businesses can’t work very well with pre-packaged services. They need highly customized ones to increase efficiency. Customized software and hardware made especially for that business is very expensive.
Open Source on the other hand, cuts many of these expenses as many Open Source software are free. Customizing it doesn’t cost much to the developers as the code is readable and editable by all, unlike closed source ones. All you need to pay for in Open Source is the service and support, not more than that in most cases.

OEM is short for Original Equipment Manufacturers. OEM companies make their products in large volumes and generally sell them to bigger companies who add value to it by incorporating it in a bigger product or just improving the overall feel of the product. However, sometimes, the bigger company is called the OEM and the smaller company is just called the ‘provider.
