Different People Making the Software
It had been a long time since the employees of Microsucks started a mutiny against its own company due to severe dissatisfaction after the development department came under a new guy by the name Gay Ozzie, who preached things which (you might guess out by reading his name!) had caused severe unrest in Microsucks.
The problem that Microsucks has been facing since the time of its conception is the lack of commitment, will or interest shown from the developer’s side, who are actually the core strength of the corporation. This is perhaps due to the dictator sort of administration present is MS, where people are made to create stuff that they are not interested to create, people are given ideas that they are not interested to implement, and that too with strict constrains of deadlines, which tick like time-bombs. Huge measures are taken to make sure that the new product somehow harms or overthrows competition. Money is the only thing that keeps programmers still coding away there, the green buck attracts mortals from Aireonus Quintalli as well…
At the same time, SourceGorge is growing, and its growing fast… With more and more new recruits from distant parts of the galaxy, people congregate there not for money, but for something more important in life – “Personal Satisfaction”. It is the faith, the belief, the motto of Open Source that drives them there. The entire idea of unifying all the world’s platforms together was considered brilliant by many. The thought of concentrating less on software compatibility, expenses, etc and more on the real scientific and technological development was applauded by all these people. They were here to make a difference, and have they? Read on to know more…
Different people using the software
Open Source, although it was targeted at the entire public at the whole, it received acceptance from just a small fraction. The reason – It was simply too late to dominate…
SourceGorge thinks the same too. The majority of the hits that come to its website are from the geek community. But due to smart, effective and low-cost marketing, it has now started gaining favorism (Another piece of neologism, You get it anyway right?) from the more primitive planets, far outside the developed and rich Aireonus Quintalli. These planets, having been historically exploited by the developed ones by literally sucking out every crumb of resource with the help of intergalactic-crude-mineral-transporting-equipment have been deprived of the Green Buck and machines to print them since ages. But this is what OSS is about, one thing that you don’t need to use it is the green buck.
Microsucks is feeling the pinch already, but who cares? The lowest spec. version of the new “Short Antler” platform would start at a price which only people who own the Cray XT3 PCs and those with pockets deeper than the deepest of Black Holes could purchase…
Currently, OSS is gaining popularity among the poorer corners of the world such as India, parts of Africa, developing Asia and even parts of Latin America. Many success stories of OSS transforming the lives of the people of the developing world can be shown here. (Link to the case studies here)

Better for Coders
Open source software development is quite different from conventional closed source software development. Closed source software companies for example, let’s assume a fictional company by the name Microsucks, which follows a closed source approach to development and SourceGorge, which follows, ahem, the OSS law…

Faster development
Oops, we mentioned a line about this in the previous section itself. Anyway, the mongrel finally manages to create his brainchild. He uploaded a downloadable and easy-to-install version of his extension on the Mongrella Flamewolf website. Within a span of about 30 nanoseconds, the new extension hits nearly 2,486,546 downloads backed by tons of comments and praises about the new idea. The mongrel thinks, “Insignificant and trivial idea, eh?”

Is Open Source a thing of the future?
No; Not at all. That’s as bad as saying we don’t have birds flying around. It’s not about having a different perspective here, it’s just a fact. Open source is here. Look around you, look at the browser you’re using, or the mail client you have open, the backend components of the website you’re browsing or maybe even the operating system you might be on.

Greater Freedom
As told before, SG sees developers in users. Following the movement that ‘rebels’ started in a distant planet Earth and following the guidelines they had set for building OSS, SG still continues its excellence in building better and better stuff for everyone.

Open Standards
