Why People don’t go for OSS?
Well, we just explained what open source is all about. As you can infer from that article, we have a notion that supports open source. That brings in a fundamental question, why is it that people don’t go in for OSS? Why is it that many people still ask, “What was it again?” when you speak about it?
The reasons for that can go beyond our writing limitations. Here, in brief, we list some of the most common reasons…
Ignorance isn’t a bliss always
Yes, when it comes to open source, it isn’t. The biggest problem faced by the open source industry and the biggest reason why we made this site are the same. People simply don’t know about all the choices thrown at them. Unlike closed source proprietary products, having a backbone of a multi-million-dollar industry, all Open Source companies cannot always afford Esha Sherwani (An Indian actress/dancer who promoted Windows Vista) to market their products.
For the Open Source software, the developers and users in the form of internet-friendly geeks are the biggest promoters.
Open Source is at its infancy
Yes, our OSS world is still a small baby when compared to the huge (aging) proprietary corporations. Firstly, even though there are several people and companies supporting OSS, there is not much of an organization or collaboration between them. The bonds still have to mature. Thanks to collaborations such as SourceForge and many others, there is some good interaction happening with all these people.
Since the industry is still in its maturing stages, software created on open source isn’t always better than its closed source counter parts.
Big Open Source firms alienating users
Large open source firms such as Ubuntu Corp. (Canonical) sticks very strictly to its beliefs on Open Source. Such as, they don’t even include simple closed source codecs such as mp3 in their distribution by default. To install the mp3 codec, a user has to type about 3 commands in the terminal. Any common user would react to this as; “Aahh! (gasping) 3 commands in the terminal?”
People find simple things such as the one above complicated due to this because of which OSS is not able to take of in the home user segment. There are very few OSS firms that really take interest to simplify and make Open Source an easy to use and user friendly platform.
Tons of misconceptions
Open source isn’t as evil as it looks. People are badly prejudiced about Open Source and believe in things which are not necessarily true. We want to do some myth-busting here. So let’s go to the next section.
Inside This Section
History
History, they say, has a habit of repeating itself. This is certainly true in the tale of Open Source. The saga of Open Source has its own heroes, the warriors, daring to dream, wanting to make a difference. There are vast, powerful ‘kingdoms’ which go all out trying to suppress these lone heroes. Slowly but steadily, these warriors increase in number, build their own small kingdoms, increase their power and most importantly, captured the imagination of the common people.
