Worldview / EcuadorThe Eskimo, alternatively known as the Inuit, are approximately 150,000 in number. They live in the Arctic regions of the world, such as Alaska. They are most impacted by global warming, as the retreat of the ice has put numerous villages under severe threat.
Shishmaref, a village in northern Alaska, home to about 600 Eskimos, is slowly being eroded, with global warming having increased temperatures to that extent.
Eskimo leaders are casting this as an infringement upon their human right. Through no fault of their own, they are suffering the brunt of global warming, their existence even being threatened. They are now lodging a lawsuit against the United States Government for contributing a great deal to global warming.
They are afraid this will be the final blow to the Eskimos, a long-suffering culture that is hardy and adaptable, but yet has been marginalized and put under threat by the urban world. |
