Social / Problems / Attitude Problems / Human IndifferenceVery simply put, it is the typical teenagerial response to most accusations. "If he didn't and isn't going to do it, why should I?" Most people aren't going to care about the environment because it isn't thrust in their face. Their survival and luxuries naturally take precedence. Large-scale environmental failure isn't likely to occur in their lifetime and thus won't take priority over living their lives to the fullest. Similarly, as with the Tragedy of the Commons, because few if anyone takes initiative to save the environment, the environment ultimately suffers.
In the First World, people who splurge on designer handbags and automobiles don't really care where or how their goods came from, and even if they knew they wouldn't care beyond its brand and functionality. Similarly, in the Third World, people don't really care if dumping their excrement in a river is going to hurt the environment, all they are concerned with is essentially their survival. |
