Recycling

Most things can be recycled. This means that we take the used things and turn them back into new things so we can use them again. Glass, plastic, and paper can all be recycled.

Many towns have sites where you can take things to have them recycled. When you recycle, you need separate trash cans for things. You might have one trash can for paper, one trash can for metal, and one trash can for glass. When you empty those trash cans at the recycling center, they keep the things separated. Companies buy back these used things and process them so that they’re new again. This saves a lot of pollution and a lot of money.

Composting is another way to recycle. Whenever you rake up leaves or pine straw, take those leaves and put them into a huge pile. After a few months, you can dig in that pile and see that the leaves are starting to turn into a rich dirt. You can use this for fertilizer. This is a lot better way to get rid of the leaves than burning them. Burning them gives off dangerous chemicals that we might breathe. So the next time you rake fall leaves, compost them!

Try this for a week. Sort your trash into separate cans or bags. Have one for paper (newspaper, boxes, etc.). Have one for metal (empty cans, etc.). Have one for glass (empty jars and bottles). At the end of a week, see how much you have in each can or bag. You will be surprised at how much you could recycle every week.
