Grains of sand don’t fit together perfectly, and have tiny spaces between them. That’s why water can run through sand quickly, and why sand dries quickly.
Sand will hold together when it’s wet, and will stay together after it dries, but if you touch it, it will fall apart easily. You find a lot of sand at the beach and near water. Silt is a kind of sand, but it’s even smaller. It will hold a little more water than regular sand does.
