The First type of percussion was hitting any thing to produce sound. Drums then evolved and are known to have existed from around 6000 B.C. The earliest form of the snare drum was the medieval tabor. It is a double headed drum. Often it has one single gut snare. Snares were primarily used as a military instrument, and snares and the fife are still associated with the infantry. In the 18th century they were introduced into other music. In the 19th century is replaced the tenor drums in the military.
