The saxophone was invented in 1840 by Antoinne (Adolphe) Sax. In 1841, the first saxophone, a C bass, was displayed for the first time to the famous conductor, Hector Berlioz. The saxophone is a woodwind instrument although it has a brass body. There are fourteen different saxophones in all. The mouthpiece of the sax was eventually made smaller and more parallel. This gave the sax the loud, obnoxious sound needed for jazz and dance music. Since this happened, the saxophone has primarily been thought of as a jazz instrument.
