Home Up Clarinet Flute Oboe Saxophone Bassoon

Johann Christoph Denner (1655 -?) invented the clarinet. The clarinet is a woodwind instrument. The clarinet evolved from an instrument called the chalumeau. Mozart was the first composer to use the clarinet in a symphony.

It is the first true single reed instrument. It first appeared in the year 1690 and had a range of 1.5 octaves. During the 1700’s the clarinet had many improvements. More keys were added.  In 1844, 2 French men applied the Boehm Flute Key System to the clarinet.

For over 300 years the clarinet has become a popular choice in bands.
