The bassoon is a large double reed instrument. It has a much lower sound than most woodwinds. The double reed is attached to a small curved tube called a bocal, which fits into the bassoon. When the player blows air between the reeds, the air inside the instrument travels over nine feet to the bottom of the instrument, then up to the top where the sound comes out. In order to play a bassoon, most players must have rather large hands, so most begin on another instrument and learn bassoon secondly. Bassoons are usually made of maple wood, although some models are now made of ebonite (hard, black rubber). The bassoon is first type of reed instrument. Created by the Egyptians in B.C. times. The primitive form was barley straw and was pressed flat and placed in a small pipe. These Egyptian reed pipes later had three to four holes added. They varied in length. The Romans had a similar instrument called the tibiae. Kim Walker is a world-renowned bassoonist.
