Mongolia is the country with rich history of using the coins an other currencies during various periods of its existence. Scholars have found the historical evidences showing that history of using the coins and currencies could be dated back to the time of origin of the first states on the territory of Mongolia. Coins which belong to various states existed on the territory of Mongolia could be found everywhere. Up to date the coins of Khuns, Turks, Uigurs, Kidans and the Mongolian Empire have been found. Along with it, the golden, silver, bronze and other coins minted and used by Chinggis Khagan and his successors in conquered countries or territories with purpose of their economic revival, trade development and taxation have been preserved till the present time. This site covers as the coins of the ancient Mongolian States so the coins of the Mongolian Khaganat in Iran ( Ilikhanid), the coins of the Mongolian Khaganat in Russia (the Golden Horde), the Mongolian Khaganat in Central Asia ( Chaghataiid).
Genealogy of the Great Mongolian Khagans and their successors as well as the chronology of their rules have been enclosed in order to deepen the understanding about the coins in ancient times and clarify its role in history of Mongolia. Introducing of the first banknotes with golden and silver guarantee by Khubilai khagan in Yuan Empire was the remarkable event in the world history which show the possibility of using the banknotes as a reliable currency and one of the outstanding contributions of Mongolia to world cultural heritage.
We included in this web site the banknotes of Mongolia Yuan Empire and banknotes used in large cities and monasteries of Mongolia during the period of Manchu rule as well as currencies of theocratic monarchy of Bogdo khan and the constitutional monarchy.
We pursued also the aim to introduse to the visitors and numismatists the coins and currencies which has been used since the establishment of the national bank of Mongolia in 1925 after victory of the people's revolution till the present days and memorial coins issued from the Mongol bank since 1971 for the numismatic purpose.
