Hieroglyphics are what the Egyptians used to read and write. The people spoke vowels, but weren’t normally written. They would only write it if the word began with the vowel.
The hieroglyphic alphabet is different than ours. They don’t necessarily use the letters “ABC”. Hieroglyphics use pictures instead. The pictures are normally animals or objects. The Egyptians change the alphabet every few years.
Hieroglyphics are sometimes read from left to right. But they could also be read from right to left. Hieroglyphics are normally read top to bottom.
Hieroglyphics use about over 700 signs. They made Hieroglyphics seem hard so that not many people could use the language. The Egyptians wanted to keep it to themselves. Instead of writing the lettering on normal paper, Hieroglyphics were written on tombs, temples, and pyramids. But they would write them on paper sometimes.
To write business contracts, letters, and stories, the Egyptians would use something called Hieratic writing. Hieratic was a fast version of Hieroglyphics. They always read from right to left. Later on in Ancient Egypt, a new version of writing came. It was called Demotic writing. This writing was mostly used for business.
