The Life Support Site
Welcome CPR Choking Recovery Help Miscellaneous Tests

Interview: John Ellams

Edward: Welcome
Edward: I think I've spoken about what we are doing before?
John: Yes.
Edward: We will use all or parts of this interview on the website. Are you OK with us doing this?
Edward: Which Life Support qualifications do you hold?
John: Bronze Medallion, Award of Merit, Life Support 1, 2, 3
Edward: Is it useful to have this website as a reference?
John: I'm guessing the web site would be very helpful as when I wanted to do my, well all of my Life Support exams there wasn't a website that was there that I could use, so, yeah this would be very helpful.
Edward: What's the most important section to you?
John: Choking and CPR, as I had the most difficult time remembering what they where, and now I don't need to know them, I know them off by heart, but anyway yeah they would and are very important sections for me
Edward: Have you ever had to use your Life Support skills?
John: Not as yet, I would what you would call a white cloud as I haven't had to use anything and (touch wood) I wont have to use them either
Edward: Do you find it difficult to keep up to date with the changes which are made to the syllabus?
John: No - I have regular staff training where I work.
Edward: How did the recent changes to the life support syllabus affect you?
John: We learnt them in a staff training session, that's all really.
Edward: Do you think it should be compulsory for everyone / students to learn Life Support skills?
John: No, I think everyone should have a choice, but then I think every one should have a basic understanding/ Knowledge of life support
Edward: Do you think it shows a certain character or type of person who actively goes out to learn these skills?
John: No
Edward: Why do you think it's important that students should learn life support?
John: So that in an accident, a lifesaver can take control and everyone else can step back and help if need be
Edward: Is there a lack of Lifesavers / people qualified in Life Support?
John: Erm, not to my knowledge...
Edward: How has Life Support training led you into a job as a Lifeguard?
John: Well, it was my mum who got me involved in life support training, and before then I had no ambition to become a lifeguard, but as I got half way through my life support training I decided that it would be a good idea, and with out it I would most defiantly of failed my pool lifeguard
Edward: How do you use your Life Guard role?
John: To enforce rules and to gain respect
Edward: Did you enjoy your Life Support tuition?
John: Yes, it was a blast, and Life Saver Lindsey, that was a classic Joke, and the J-Team...
Edward: Would you recommend that others should obtain Life Support tuition?
John: If they want to
Edward: Is it important to you to keep your training up to date?
John: Yes it is and I do so monthly
Edward: Are you aware of any places that offer Life Support / Lifesaving / St.John's Ambulance Tuition?
John: No, I am not aware
Edward: Are there any other helpful resources that might be good to link to on our website?
John: Again no, my bad
Edward: Thanks John.
John: No problem, same time next week I think.
