Mr. Hector Nieba
Park Ranger, Calilegua National Park, Jujuy, Argentina

Mr. Nieba is a park ranger ay Calilegua National Park in Jujuy, Argentina. He works closely with endangered animals and provided us some insight into the status of endangered animals in Argentina.

What endangered animals live in Argentina ?

There are many endangered animals and plants. We divide the animals into reptiles, birds, and mammals. Some endangered reptiles include the alligator, aquatic tortoise, Lagartiga, Ranita yunqueña or jujeña, and lagarto tail piche, among others. Some endangered birds are Aquila monera, Harpía, Peregrine, Lechuza, black Carpintero, sky-blue Urraca, among others. Some endangered mammals are the Yaguareté, Vicuña, Monito of the mountain, courteous Patagonian Lobo, big-eared Murciélago, Rata rupestrian viscacha, dwarf Cachalote, Risso's Delfín, Ballena minke, Puma or lion, large Hurón, Tuco chunk jujeño among others. Unfortunately, the list is very long.

What are the leading causes of endangerment?

Contamination, poaching, the illegal trade of flora and fauna, commercial extraction (hunting or fishing), indiscriminate control of pests, ignorance, agricultural exploitation and lack of environmental sustainability, and the introduction of feral species are major causes.

Why do we say that the situation is alarming?

The situation is alarming because the species disappear and break the natural order of the life cycle. This will bring big after effects like plagues and illnesses in the future.

Who is in charge of the execution of the laws and protection of nature?

The main governing body of the nation is Secretary of the Environment and Sustainable Development and the National Director of Wild Flora and Fauna. This Direction counts on three areas: Financial direction, Technique, and Commercialization. At the provincial level, there are different partitions that have different names in each particular case, from Provincial Director of Wild Fauna and Flora, to the Ministry of Ecology.

The regulatory agencies assigned by the Nation are the National Aeronautical Police, National Gendarmerie, Environmental Protective Division, Argentinean Federal Policemen, the Environmental Department, the Division for the Prevention of Ecological Crime, and, in instances of control of shipments and cargos enroute, the National Customs Administration.

Do these measures work?

At the National Park where I am a ranger, the animals obey these measures themselves; regrettably, they do not know of limits, and when they come out of the park, they are often hunted by poachers. We are solving this situation by succeeding in making a great chain of solidarity among the citizens and the factors of status, in order that any abnormal situation can be reported.

What is your opinion on the worldwide situation of endangered animals?

I think that stricter international laws must be created and that they must be obeyed, and that companies and people understand the situation through teaching and information. At the global level, each day species continue disappearing and this will produce a natural disaster that will return to the life of humans.

What advice would you give to other people to protect the envioronment?
Some advice:
  • If you visit an exotic country or where there are animals, do not buy souvenirs made from tropical woods, ivories, tortoise's shells, furs, etc. Neither animal nor exotic plants, since different animals can be in danger of extinction and, hence, protected by authorities.
  • Avoid lighting bonfires in the forest.
  • Do not leave trash in the field.
  • Do not feed the exotic animals.
  • Only use products that do not damage the environment.
  • The main thing is to consult a professional about doubts on any aspect of nature.
At the Calilegua National Par, what is the most endangered species?
The most endangered species at our park is the Yaguaraté (The yaguareté - onca lion - is the biggest cat of the Americas. It was declared a natural monument because it is regarded as a species threatened nationally. The destruction of its environment and the poaching are the main problems at the present time for its conservation.) It lives free and it is our park's symbol.
What is your job within the National Park?
The Park Ranger is an authority constituted within the parks. I make sure laws and regulations related to conserving nature are followed. I also have police administrative functions that the Administration delegates. At the same time, I have a social area of work to offer protection and safety to visitors in the Park or in the allotted Protected Area. (Functions of control and social and ecological vigilance)
Can children older than 8 years do something to protect their environment and endangered animals?
I think that the children are the future and they are the ones who love animals the most. The children have to show this love for the animals to the entire world in order that all adults may understand that we must love and take care of nature.
Facundo: Thank you very much for the interview.
Guardaparque (Hector Nieba): Regards to all the TQ kids worldwide.
