Courtney, Age 10, USA

Hello! My name is Courtney. I am from Massachusetts in the United States of America. I am almost 11 years old and in the fifth grade, Middle School. I love to sketch and I love to bake. My favorite colors are white, black and purple. I have a 3 year old sister and a 6 year old step-sister. My cousins and I started a non-profit organization that helps people in crisis around the world. I look forward to this summer when I can dedicate more time to those in need.

Other things that interest me are science experiments and anything to do with crystals and rocks. I think I might like to be an Orthodontist when I get older. My two favorite sports to play are soccer and basketball. Another thing I love is to collect things. I have a special spoon collection and I collect rocks.

My role in this ThinkQuest project was to do artwork, research, and to write a collaborative play. I encouraged my friends to work with me on this awesome project and they loved being a part of the fun! Thanks to my cousin Dylan for getting me interested in this project!

Dylan, Age 11, USA

Hi, my name is Dylan. Since you're here, I guess you're curious about all of us who worked on this project. Here's the low-down on me:

I live in New Hampshire, United States of America, with my parents, my dog Nestlé, and my sister Ammu, who is here when she is not at college. I like to play outside with my friends. Tennis, basketball, snowboarding, and swimming are my favorite sports. I am a vegetarian and have been since I was born. I am in sixth grade and my favorite subjects are math and science. I started taking karate lessons last year and I am an orange-belt. I love music and I currently play piano, saxophone, guitar, a double-headed, barrel-shaped Indian drum called a mrdanga, and traditional Indian hand cymbals called kartals. In the past, I have played the trumpet, clarinet, traditional drums, and a hand-crafted, goblet shaped African drum called a djembe. My favorite color is green and my favorite food is French fries.

I really enjoyed working on this project. My role in the project involved a little bit of everything: I came up with the initial layout for the homepage, did some research and writing, created some graphics, conducted some interviews, and coordinated the transfer of work among the team members. I thoroughly enjoyed working with this team. The project was a big challenge, but a great learning experience. I would like to thank my cousin Courtney and my friends Shruthi, George, Facundo, and Simran for all their work and time. I also want to thank Ms. Salwa Kefi (our primary coach), Ms. Heeral Desai (our assistant coach), my family (especially my sister Ammu), my teachers, my school district, and all of my friends for their support and encouragement. Thank you, everyone. We could not have made this without you!

Facundo, Age 9, Argentina

Hello, my name is Facundo. I am 9 years old. I live in Argentine with my parents and my little sister Sol.

Something important that you all must know about me is that my native language is Spanish. Throughout this project I was learning and improving my English. In the beginning, I used to feel like my e-mail to the team was like speaking in Tarzan’s movie. I hoped that they will understand what I was writing, so I always wrote my e-mails both in English and Spanish. Dylan’s sister, Ammu, translated for me and for the rest of my team if something was not clear.

In my country Argentine, there are plenty of animals but many are facing extinction due to habitat destruction. I love to investigate and the PC is part of the family, it should be in my father's genes. My family helped me communicate and stay in touch with the rest of my team. My role in this project was to conduct interviews and help with research as needed. It was challenging for me, but with the help of my family, I did the best I could. I enjoyed working with my entire team. I want to thank Ms. Kefi, Ms. Heeral, and Ammu Irivinti for helping me whenever I needed them. Thank you for reading and I hope you all enjoy the website we developed.

George, Age 12, Australia

My name is George, I am 12 years old and I live in Adelaide, which is the capital city of South Australia. I have a brother who is 17 and both of my parents are teachers. I am in Year 7 and I like my school. I enjoy playing basketball, drawing and painting War Hammer figures. I really like anything to do with animals and that is why I found working on this website a good experience.

For my research, I spent a lot of time at our city zoo – the Adelaide Zoo. I went twice with my mum. The first time I went, it was so hot that the animals were inside and out of the shade so I didn’t see many animals. The second time that I went, I saw the most amazing animals and it was great because we managed to get some good video of the monkeys. They were funny.

I have always enjoyed learning about endangered and threatened animals, and I have learnt so much more since working on this website. I was also lucky enough to spend three whole days at the Zoo school with my class. We saw lots of things that we wouldn’t normally see. I like the tapirs the best and I watched them for a long time.

I have enjoyed working with my team, especially Dylan who my mum was lucky enough to meet when she visited America last year. It is a great way to meet other kids from around the world and to work on a great website like this.

I hope that you enjoy our website and the great information you will read on endangered and threatened animals.

Shruthi, Age 12, USA
   Loud, Bubbly, Sweet, Lovable
Sister of Neha
Lover of chocolate, singing, and the mall
Who feels excited when she's with friends
Who fears spiders, clowns, and the dark
Who would like to see sunny mornings, free clothes, and the future
Who dreams of a million dollar shopping spree
Who would like to travel to Italy
Who lives in Chicago
Who studies in grade seven
Who's called Mini by friends

Most of the writing you see on the website was done by me based on many hours of research. I also worked on the cartoons and comics as well as the word games. The part I enjoyed most was working with a shareware software called Quandary which I used to make the “Are you a Fervent Supporter of Wildlife?” quiz, interactive.

I realize that my efforts on this website have been enhanced by the creativity of my teammates. Working on this project with teammates from different countries has been both educational and enjoyable. I'd really like to thank my coaches, teammates, and family for all the encouragement and support.

Simran, Age 12, India

My name is Simran. I am 12 years old and live in Mumbai, India. I am in Standard 8 and I love my school. I love working with computers. I adore animals and that is the main reason I really loved the opportunity to be part of this special team.

My role in this project was web design. I worked closely with Dylan and Courtney on this. Dylan helped with the conceptual layout and Courtney made many of the graphics. They both had amazing ideas and our coach Heeral, guided me with all technical obstacles.

One of the biggest problems, which happened throughout the course of our project that I had to deal with, was losing our electricity everyday. In our area, they shut off power for four hours everyday and during that time I cannot do anything on the computer. To balance my school work and do the web design was challenging. I had to stay up later than I normally would do to be able to do the computer work. Some days, the four hours we lost power was continuous. Other days, it was intermittent totaling four hours daily. Sometimes, Dylan will be waiting to talk to me on IM, but I would not be online at the time I told him because of power cut. This was frustrating but Dylan understood what was happening if I wasn’t there at the time I told him.

Regardless, this project was a great experience. I want to thank Ms. Kefi for her constant help, Ms. Heeral for her patience and technical insight, and Dylan, Shruthi, Courtney, Facundo, and George for being patient with me until the end.

Our site is now finished and we hope that you will enjoy what we have created.

Primary Coach, Salwa, Tunisia

My name is Salwa. I am an E.L.T teacher in Manouba area (Tunisia). Right at the age of 5 I felt I had a burning desire for teaching. I used to perform role-plays at home with my sisters and cousins. I had already embodied the teacher’s role while my cats had been assigned the role of the students. It was a headache to keep the cats for a while in small boxes as they would like to break free from their confinement.

I love animals and I have a relatively large family which have made my life magic and pleasant. I have got two dogs: Jessy, a one-year–female Labrador dog and Fanny, a six-year–female German Shepherd as well as 3 female tabby cats: Shalimar, Lea, Lina and 2 male Persian cats: Oscar and Cesar.

The first time I was approached by a team member to coach a multinational team I was somewhat reticent as I thought the challenge I had to face was huge and I worried about being entrapped by a rash decision. The first months were tough going. My online contact with the team was sometimes intermittent and it dawned on me that our collaboration would come to a standstill every now and then. But thanks to the constant and unfailing support of my E.L.T Inspector, Mrs Aicha Mezzi, who allowed me in every training session or meeting to talk at length about my exciting experience as a coach in ThinkQuest Competition, and who generously allocated much time to me during a demo lesson held at my school on October 27th, 2006 to read Dylan’s message to the Tunisian students and teachers who were present, and thanks to the team’s perseverance, diligence and devotion my confidence and enthusiasm have soared ten times higher in the course of ten months.

Admittedly, I have been very much amazed by the team’s talent and creativity as well as their accomplishment which is worth-bragging about. I also am very much impressed by the assistant coach Heeral’s talent in web design. It was a great joy working with her.

We are very much indebted to the team’s parents whose continuous strong support, patience and understanding have been a moral bolster to the whole team in good and hard times alike.

I must admit that I have been deeply touched by my team's noble act who lent lavishly the warmth of their hearts, through their donation, to needy children at Jilla Parishad School, an underprivileged school in India, who couldn't afford to buy the least school item. Thanks to the team's help they managed enthusiastically to take part in this project.

The team's initial task was to work on endangered animals. It's great to think that the project has landed them on an area of new promises which strongly hinges on solidarity between people from different continents and countries regardless of their culture, race, religion and social background. These children have set up a glaring and stunning example of love, care and generosity. They are truly the Brave New Children of today and tomorrow on whom we can count.

Assistant Coach, Heeral, India

Hello, my name is Heeral, and I am this team’s assistant coach. I was contacted by the team to find out if I can coach and guide them with the technical aspects of building a website. Initially, I was skeptical and had to give it a great deal of thought; however, their persistence made me agree to take on the challenge.

I have not since looked back. These children are simply amazing. It was pleasant and inspiring to see such young children take initiative of this nature. I was amazed at their creative ability, their writing, artistic, and design skills, and, not to mention, their clear goals and amazing communication skills.

They had a clear plan, they knew what they wanted to do, but sometimes did not know how to implement them into the website. That is when they approached me and I guided them through the process. I guided them through this project for several months; however, during the months of February and March 2007, I was online for several hours, every day, to assist them as needed.

This is my first time coaching a project of this nature and it was an incredible experience working with Salwa and all of the children. It was a pleasure working with them and despite the hard work, I truly enjoyed it. I have been working with them so closely all these months that I feel like I know each of them, although I have never met anyone.

I hope you enjoy your visit to this website and marvel at all the work they have made.
