Homer described Scylla as a monster with twelve feet, six long necks with heads lined with triple rows of sharp teeth. He imagined her voice to sound like yelping dogs. In classical art though she was depicted as a mermaid with canine fore-parts around her waist.
Scylla was a sea goddess whom haunted the rocks of a narrow strait opposite to the whirlpool of Charybdis. Six men from any ship that strayed too close to her would be devoured by her.
