In Jewish text God had created two Leviathans. After figuring they would reproduce and devour the world, the female was killed by God. He froze the meat and fashioned garments for Adam and Eve made from the skin. The male was made sterile and left alive.
Leviathan was an immense fire-breathing monster and it is said the sea would boil when it surfaced. In legend it ruled over all the sea creatures and it was heavily protected with overlapping scales as big as shields and hard, sharp scales on its underside.
From its fins bright light is radiated and it would breathe smoke from its nostrils. It is present in both Christian and Jewish text. Leviathan is discussed in Psalms 74:14 as a large multi-headed serpent that God killed and gave as food to the Hebrew people in the wilderness. It is one of the three creatures that will be served at the feast at the end of time and its skin will be will be stretched on the walls of Jerusalem to light the world.
