The term Kraken was first used in "Systema Naturae" by Carolus Linneaus in 1735. The stories of it date back to twelfth century Norway. The Kraken was still disscused widely even in 1752 when Bisop Erik Ludvigsen Pontoppidan wrote "The Natural History of Norway."

The Kraken is gigantic sea monster originating in Norwegian folklore. It is said that this beast would sometimes attack ocean-going ships and devour the sailors. The Kraken was able to suck down enormous vessels by creating a whirlpool. The Kraken appears to look like a giant squid, although it was originally described as being part octopus and part crab. One of the best descriptions of the Kraken comes from the book History of Norway, written by Pontoppidan in 1752.
