Personal Background

My family falls into the high-income bracket, and life is rather comfortable in our terrace house situated in an upmarket housing estate. Surrounded by various technological gadgets, such as laptops, personal computer and MP3 players, my family is highly IT-savvy. In addition to being highly familiar with software such as Adobe Photoshop, entertainment media such as computer game s and music are ubiquitous in our daily lives.

This being the case, it thus comes as no wonder that I have often been able to benefit fully from what the latest advancements in Information Technology have to offer; apart from software that help me in my work, I too have the fortune of enjoying the latest computer games, and the hardware to support it.

My Views on DCI

My life has indeed been much enriched by my accessibility to creative works, be it software like Microsoft Office or the latest games. While their absence would indeed make the drudgeries of life much more pronounced, I nevertheless abhor acts of copyright infringement.

I am personally a creative artiste, often engaging in design projects for school-related work. I can hence appreciate the frustration that other creative artistes feel when their work is used without attribution, or worse, sold by others for profit.

Despite having friends from a lower socio-economic stratum, I find it difficult to accept the notion, under any circumstances, that the work of others should be used without proper remuneration or first obtaining permission, be it games, music or business software. While some would argue that the use of software such as Microsoft Office, which is primarily for the purpose of increasing productivity, is essential to maintain a level playing field amongst people from different financial backgrounds, I feel that in an era when free ware is often able to provide similar critical functions, albeit without the frills, this notion is unjustified.
