Vietnam

By 1954, the Vietnamese had claimed independence from the French Empire.  It was then split into the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (communist) and the Republic of Vietnam (capitalist).  War was declared in 1959, with many other countries joining in on either side, although most notably the United States, who joined in 1965.  Pitched battles were avoided until the final stages of the war, guerrilla raids and bombing runs were used to begin with.  Once the Americans realized they were losing support from their citizens, they evacuated most of their troops, leaving only an embassy guard behind.  The war ended on April 30th 1979 with the capture of the Republic of Vietnam’s capital, Saigon, which was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the commander of the communist army.
