China In 1949, the Chinese Civil War ended, with the Communist Party under Mao Zedong in control of all of mainland China. On the 1st October, The People’s Republic of China was founded. Mao replaced the feudal system of land ownership in benefit of the poor, but after that conditions in China declined. Freedom was taken away from the people, Red Guards terrorized the citizens and individuals attempting to improve conditions were purged fro being “capitalist”. Mao died in 1976, and after a power struggle that lasted four years, Deng Xiaoping took control of China. In the nine years until the collapse of the Berlin Wall, conditions in China greatly improved thanks to Deng’s reforms, but he was criticised for an increase in materialistic thinking, which went against communist values. Since the Cold War, the economy of the nation has grown, although the country remains communist. |
