EpithalamusThe epithalamus is located towards the top of the thalamus and back. The epithalamus includes the pineal gland and the habenular nuclei. The pineal gland is believed to cause sleep because it releases a hormone known as melatonin; it only releases it when in the dark, that is why it is thought to cause sleep. The habenular nuclei are associated with smell and the emotional responses to smell. |
