Caffeine is probably one
of the most widely used drugs on the planet due to effects. Caffeine is associated
with increased alertness, energy, concentration. Caffeine helps to bring about
the processes to activate choline, which is the building block for the neurotransmitter
acetylcholine. One of caffeine’s products after synthesis is choline
thus the increase is understandable. In numerous studies, including one in
1994 at California's West Valley College, choline-injesting subjects performed
better on memory tests within 90 minutes which supports thoughts on caffeine.
In the study The effects of coffee consumption on sleep and melatonin secretion
researchers looked at how caffeine interfered with melatonin. Melatonin is
a hormone in humans that increases sleepiness, decreases core temperature,
and increases peripheral temperature in humans. It is essentially is one of
he factors responsible for us as humans feeling tired and actually falling
asleep as well as staying asleep. The researchers found that coffee consumption
interferes with sleep quantity and quality due to it messing with the amount
of melatonin the body utilizes or feels the effects of, thus making us feel
less sleepy.
