Intro

Smoking is one of the worst things kids or adults can do. It can cause:

  1. bad breath
  2. yellow teeth
  3. smelly clothes
  4. more and coughs
  5. difficulty keeping up with friends when playing sports
  6. and many more deadly cancers and diseases

But if you think that only affects the smokers, you are totally wrong.

Why?

Ask yourself a question, do smokers only smoke at their homes?

Well, obvioiusly you know that it is ridiculous because we you walk out into public places, you would see a couple of smokers smoking their cigarettes. And this tobacco smoke produced into the public environment is called Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS]. Others inhaling this polluted air is called passive smoking. Evidence and research has found that passive smoking is a cause of fatal lung and heart disease. There are also other impacts, which range from serious respiratory conditions to irritation and dislike of the smell. The impact on heart and circulation is shocking too, it may be as much as half the risk faced by an active smoker. Researchers estimate that passive smoking will kill almost 100 Londoners through cancer and over 1,000 through heart disease each year. That's why you may also be affected.

¡PBut don't panic.

Look around you again. If you are living in Kong Kong, Norway, Sweden or America, you will probably see more clearly of the whole picture. Governments are starting to ban smoking completely in restaurants and bars and other indoor places. Therefore the smokers will be transferred to the go outside or to a designated smoking area when they want to smoke.

After you notice these regulations, you might be really glad and say, "Oh this is great! We don't have to suffer from these second hand smoke anymore! We can be healthier this way!"

But pause, wait and look back.

But if we put more and more places to non-smoking areas, the freedoms and choices of million of smokers may be threatened. Some people who oppose smoking legislation like Stephen Helfer believed that the individual is in a far superior position to determine their own self-interest regarding life style and health choices and so the government has no right to intefere with the smokers. A common argument opposing government prohibitions on public smoking is that they violate the rights of individuals and property owners. Many smokers argue that non-smokers should just stay away.
