What is a veteran? A veteran is someone who fought for our country in order to keep our freedom. A veteran is a person who is alive or dead and who has served in the military. In all of the Nation’s history, America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard have never said no to the call to protect our freedom, help our allies, and to turn back the enemy. In November, P.S.175 had an assembly to honor all veterans. The student council and their advisors put together a Veterans Day play for the children. Two students sang “The Star Spangled Banner” while another played the piano. Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th. That was the day the Armistice truce, was signed which ended the fighting in World War I. The first celebration of Veterans Day was in 1947 in Alabama. Raymond Weeks organized a parade and other festivities to honor veterans in WWII.
After the festivities, a
volunteer in our school, Mr. Baker told us about his life in the Army. Today it is our honor to give a big thank you to America’s veterans and to make them aware of how much we appreciate them for their service and their sacrifices. Today we celebrate America’s Veteran’s for keeping this nation “the land of the free and the home of the brave!”
