At Fort Hamilton, we interviewed Staff Sgt. Nikcole Thomas who joined the Air Force in 1998. We sat at a long table in the blue room, preparing to question her on her life working for the Air Force. The first thing we noticed about her was her beautiful green eyes and bubbling personality. When we carried on with the interview we noticed a whole lot more. Unlike most of the people we interviewed, Staff Sgt. Thomas did not go to war, get into a fight or get hurt. It was a safe but important job. Thank goodness. Before she was in the Air Force, Staff Sgt. Thomas went to basic training which is where you learn about the military, do physical training, and learn to march. She woke up at 5:00a.m. to do physical training. She would then come back, shower, have breakfast, and march or have class. The basic training was six weeks. Nikcole Thomas said that training was very difficult. So difficult that she cried almost every night. She says she pushed herself a lot. She would then go to technical training school where she learned to do Air Superiority. She had to type orders for new recruits, get them plane tickets and send them off. Staff Sgt. Thomas has been all over the world. She’s been to Germany, Turkey, Spain, Belgium, Poland, and the Netherlands. In Germany, Staff Sgt. Thomas worked for directors and tracked incoming paperwork that needed to be signed by the General. In Turkey, she got there 2 days before September 11, 2001 so it was her job to guard the land. She shut everything down and provided security. After all the hard work Nikcole Thomas has done in the Air Force, I’m sure you’re not surprised that she has received 8 medals. 1 for accommodation, 2 for achievement and 5 for outstanding units. To get those awards, you need great performance or for doing something wonderful. We can see why Staff Sgt. Thomas received many medals. When she completed her service with the Air Force, Staff Sgt. Thomas went to work at Fort Hamilton. There, she processes new recruits and makes sure they get to basic training safely. She has a very safe and happy life there. She deserves it! |
