Boiler Technician 3rd Class Mike Steinmetz is a member of the United States Navy. Mike had flown by plane which landed on the the ship he was assigned to, the USS Ranger. Mike's job was to make the steam on the ship in order for it to move. The USS Ranger was a big aircraft carrier. Mike fought in the Vietnam War for 4 years. Mike followed in his father's footsteps. His father fought in World War 1. The food on the ship was good. Mike’s favorite food was the pizza. Pizza is our favorite food too! Mike had kitchen duty for one month and cooked the food for the other sailors on the ship. The USS Ranger traveled to many places. The ship first went to San Francisco then to Hawaii, Guan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia. The ship traveled 20ml per hour. Mike’s favorite place he visited was Hong Kong. He explained to us that the ships and the aircraft carriers are huge! The ship was about the size of 3 city blocks! On the ship there are stores and bakeries just like a real city. They also showed movies that the sailors could watch on their free time. Although, usually they had to choose between sleeping and watching a movie! Being on a ship might sound like fun but Mike tells us it was very dangerous. Some boilers on the ship exploded! Some people fell off the ship! Some people got stuck in the engines! Mike finished his years in the Navy and now he is working in our school. He is a custodial engineer. Mike’s job in our school is to make sure everything is up and running just like on the USS Ranger! We now know if something is going wrong with the boilers we know who to go to!
