Artillery - Powerful guns, for
example, cannons, howitzers, missile launchers, and mortars
AWOL (pronounced "a-wall") - An acronym for the United States and
other armed forces expression "Absent With Out Leave" or "Absence
Without Official Leave". The United States Marine Corps and the United
States Navy use the term "Unauthorized Absence" (UA) instead.
Battalion - Military unit, a large body of soldiers organized to
act together
Boot Camp-Camp for military recruits, military training camp for
recruits to the U.S. military
Civil Authority - A person who exercises authority over civilian
affairs
Civilian - A person following the pursuits of civil life,
especially one who is not an active member of the military or police.
Coast - The coast is defined as the part of the land adjoining or
near the ocean. A coastline refers to a particular length of coast. The
term coastal describes a location as being on or near a coast.
Drill - A type of military training, particularly in marching
maneuvers and weapons handling, that involves the constant repetition of
a set pattern of movements or tasks
Homeland Security -
An independent agency established to make the United States safe from
threats or attacks
Infantry - Soldiers who fight primarily on foot (although in
modern times they often use motorized, mechanized, or even airborne
transportation). Traditionally, they have used personal weapons, but
modern infantry invariably operate with attached support weapons and
sometimes armored fighting vehicles.
International - Belonging to two or more nations
Military base - A facility, settlement, or installation that
shelters military equipment and personnel. A military base may also
contain large concentrations of military supplies in order to support
military logistics. These are restricted to the general public, and only
authorized personnel may enter them (be it military personnel or their
relatives)
Oath - Words of promise, the words said when making a formal
pledge, especially when reciting a conventional formula such as that
used in a court of law
Ports - A place by the sea, or by a river or other waterway,
where ships and boats can dock, load, and unload
Squadron - An organized group of people. In the Navy a naval unit
containing two or more divisions of fleet. In the Air Force, belonging
to a group that contains two or more flights
Surveillance - Continual observation of a person or group,
especially one suspected of doing something illegal
Veteran - A person who has served in the armed forces |
