Military Memories

ARMY

MARINES NAVY AIR FORCE COAST GUARD YOU AND THE MILITARY GLOSSARY HOME

As you may already know we visited Fort Hamilton. We found out they host a famous military ceremony called Fleet Week, and we were invited!

Fleet Week has been around since 1984. Fleet Week is held in honor of the U.S. Marines and Navy corps. During Fleet Week, you can go on tours of some of the visiting ships, go to lectures, watch competitions, go to the Memorial Day ceremony and watch musical performances by sailors and the Marines.

The Memorial Day ceremony includes a lot of events. They have the 21 gun salute, playing of the taps, unfurling of the 100 foot flag, a ceremonial wreath laying, and a fly-over of a military aircraft in the missing man formation. These activities are happening at the deck of the Intrepid. Fleet Week includes all five branches of the Military.

At the New York Harbor over a dozen Navy and Coast Guard ships as well as ships from all over the world come! People get a chance to go on these ships for tours. These Fleet vessels are open for free tours daily to the public. It can’t get any better than that!

They also hold competitions which the public can visit daily. Some of the competitions are the stem-stern relay race, tug-of-war crew competitions and the Best Chow Competition.

If you ask us, this sounds like seven days of fun. See if you can join these events and we promise, you’ll be happy if you do! Please visit http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/pages/fleetweek  for more information and important dates.
