John Comiskey, of the United States Coast Guard, is a kind and brave person. He picked the Coast Guard over the other branches of the military because it is the only branch that has civil authority. He told us many interesting things about the Coast Guard. Mr. Comiskey explained to us that before 9\11, many people did not even know the Coast Guard existed! We were surprised to know that. He also told us that the Coast Guard protects our coasts, hence the name Coast Guard. By the way, he is married to Maureen Comiskey, a Kindergarten teacher in our school.

Mr. Comiskey went to Boarding Officer School and learned about United State Coast Guard laws. He also was taught all about boating. Right now, he works for the New York Police Department. However, he trains twice a month for the Coast Guard. He was in the Coast Guard for fifteen years. He joined when he was twenty-five. He protected the coasts of New Jersey. He joined the military and took his oath at Fort Hamilton.

John Comiskey explained to us an average day in the Coast Guard. He said that an average day could start at any time. The Coast Guard assembles a team and then they get dressed to start the day. The mission of the day and the weather is explained to them. The weather is very important because it can affect their mission. The Coast Guard is always checking the weather. Mr. Comiskey will take boats to Manhattan and go to his station under the Verrazano Bridge. He will watch the U. N., the World Trade Center, and he will inspect all the ferries. The United States’ water is within a radius of two and a half miles from the coast. Once you go further than that, you are in international waters. The Coast Guard can inspect anybody’s ship within the waters of the United States of America. Many terrorists try to fool the Coast Guard by going in the country using small fishing boats. When some people try to come to the country with explosives, you can bet the Coast Guard will be there to inspect the ship.

The Coast Guard has fewer people than any other branch of the military. There are approximately 40,000 people in the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard sent 2,000 people to rescue civilians that were on roof tops after Hurricane Katrina.

John Comiskey explained that the most exciting time in the military was when he met George Bush and Bill Clinton. They both thanked him for protecting the U.S.A. All his hard work and dedication had paid off!
