The United States Air Force is the branch of the military responsible for doing military operations in air and space. The Air Force was formed from the Army Air Corps in 1947. The role of the Air Force is very important in the defense of the United States. The United States Air Force is under the control of the United States Department of the Air Force. In the Air Force, there are nine important commands. Each command is led by a four star general. The basic organizational unit of the Air Force is called a squadron. The number of aircraft in a squadron depends on the squadron’s purpose. Usually, there are around 10-20 aircraft in a bomber squadron, 18-24 in a fighter squadron and 8-16 in a transport squadron. Almost all of the Air Force is broken into Aerospace Expeditionary Forces (AEFs). Each AEF is ready for immediate deployment for 90 days every 15 months. Each AEF has 10,000 to 15,000 personnel and has about 90 multi-role fighter and bomber aircraft, 31 refueling aircraft, and 13 aircraft for missions involving surveillance, information about an enemy and electronic warfare. |
