Decomposers

Like bacteria, many fungi are decomposers-----Organisms that break down the chemicals in dead organisms. For example, many fungi live in the soil and break down the chemicals in dead plant matter. This process returns important nutrients to the soil. Without fungi and bacteria, the earth would be buried under dead plants and animals.
