Welcome to the Wonderful World of Microorganisms! Our goal is to help you understand the Animal Cell, Plant Cell, Fungi, Protists, Viruses, and Bacteria. These tiny organisms are not visible to the naked eye. They have a huge impact on our daily lives. They decompose, make us sick, provides food for many organisms, and they are used to make medications. These organisms may be small in real life, but to us these subjects are huge.
Each day you come in contact with millions of microorganisms and you do not even know it! It does not matter where in the world you live there are microorganisms. Due to these tiny unseen organisms we have a food chain that supports life on earth. Without decomposers we would not be able to return nutrients into our ecosystem to support life.
Microorganisms can be helpful or harmful. They can make us sick or give us cures for our illnesses. They can produce food or destroy entire crops. They can decompose dead matter or spoil the food we eat. Without these tiny organisms our world would not be the same.
This site was created by a group of fifth and sixth grade students at Austin Tracy Elementary in Lucas, Kentucky. This site was entered into the Thinkquest contest in April of 2007.
