Content;; Labels & Stereotypes![]() Audio FileLabels : People's PerspectiveWhat is a label?A label is a name given (or stereotype) which defines an identity to a person by what they believe in, what they wear, how they look, and what they do. A label is bascially a classification. Labels are bad because they don't allow people to be who they want to be, and labelling leads to name-calling, harassment or bullying.Which sex receives the most labels?Actually, both females and males receive about the same amount of labels. Some labels and most of them are unisex (they can apply to both sexes). It's kind of funny, labels are like hairstyles, some can only be done on girls or guys, and others they can be done of both sexes. In today's world, both sexes receive a lot of labelling in the media. Shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy label people of homosexuality queer. The constant uses for the labels slut and skank keep on repeating themselves everywhere on tv, movies, etc. Some labels are just racist to society. For instance, chink - that word describes a person of Chinese descent, but that word is used for name-calling and harassment. It's funny that some labels came from very different origins. The label, bitch is actually a female dog if you look it up in any dictionary or reference book. Now a days, the word is used as a put down to women (specificaly). That label is heard a lot in music, from riot girl bands to hip-hop. Impossible not to label?Yes, it is almost impossible not to label a person. It's a "natural" thing to stereotype or catagorize things, or people. That's how the human mind works, the brain organizes similar "objects" into groups to separate them from different groups and to get an understanding of the whole picture. The negatives, and the positives?Labelling definitely offends people and puts people down. But then again, can't you embrace your label? This can be seen with displaying your label to the world, when I say this I mean for example, a T-shirt displaying the word punk.If you believe in the label's "philosophy" and "meanings" then why not be proud and call yourself a ___________. Stand OUT!You can see for yourself examples of labels everywhere. You usually see people of the same "label" hang out together (esp. in schools, or social environments). Things like fashion show-off your label and strikes a pose. Music preference plays a part in standing out, let's say your a rocker, your most likely to listen to rock music.Labels have strange origins, labels are created to define what happen during that era and it depicts a story that is larger than life. If you took the time to research a label and anaylze its origins, you'd be surprised what you'll find. |
