Content;; The Female Mind > Females: Food![]() According to a study by New York City-based research firm BuzzBack, more than a third (35%) of all teen girls (ages 13-19) say they often skip meals because they are too busy, 22% skip meals as a way of dieting and 21% admit that they sometimes binge after skipping meals. Teenage boys' food habits are different, but not much better: about two-thirds (sixty-six percent) say that they drink non-diet colas. Chips are their favorite snack, followed by cookies and candy bars. And while 26% of teenage girls check for calories and fat on nutritional labels, only 14% of them check for vitamins or nutrients. Although some teens have serious issues with food, there are still teens who value their nutrition. Infact, 70% of teenage girls and 56% of teenage boys want to improve the way they are eating. Additionally, 42% of teens agree with the statement: "I try to eat what's right for me as often as I can," 34% say that "when I snack, I like to snack on healthier foods like fruits and vegetables," and 29% agree that they "think a lot about nutrition when I select the foods I eat." The study also found that teenage girls are more likely to prepare their own bag lunch for school (40%), as compared to 31% of boys, and while 31% of teenage girls eat their school's cafeteria food, 37% of boys eat it. Furthermore, while 21% of girls typically prepare dinner for themselves, only 13% of boys do. Media, peer pressure and other influences make girls concious of their physical appearance: while 54% of teenage boys say they are currently happy with their weight, just 38% of teenage girls say the same. To most and the majority of females, thinness is the ideal feminine shape. It was quite different 100 years ago; if you were plump you were considered rich. In the 50’s and 60’s, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot represented well-rounded beautiful and attractive women. Things then changed – in the 80’s supermodel was now a word. Supermodels signified human Barbie dolls. As the years went by the ideal woman started to get even thinner than ever. Most of us want to belong and to be accepted; in today’s world, peer pressure is sending us unhealthy messages to how we should be accepted. |
